Philippine pop music goes through a refreshing rebirth with the emergence of the newest girl group of five teenage scene with compelling charm, striking style and total talent.

Aptly, christened Pop Girls, the group is an outcome of the collaboration of two of the most influential names in the music industry-recording magnate Boss Vic del Rosario who was responsible for creating the biggest multimedia stars of the country such as Sharon Cuneta, Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Sarah Geronimo, among others; and topnotch dancer/choreographer Geleen Eugenio who honed the dancing skills of celebrities like Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor and brought Universal Motion Dancers to the peak of the their career.

Seeing the young as consistently plausible target, Boss Vic challenges Geleen to form a group of appealing young girls who are all exceptional in singing and dancing. Though she was set to leave for the US then, Geleen decided to forgo her initial plan to accept the project and called for an audition.

There were more than fifty hopefuls but only five passed the rigid screening. But the final decision came about when Boss Vic actually saw the chosen girls perform. He was swyaed right away with each of the girls that they were immediately awarded both management and recording contracts.

The fabulous five who make up POP GIRLS are twins Lai and Mar, both aged 16 and half Lebanese; Half Filipino, half Dutch Rose, 13 years old; Half Filipino, half Swiss Schai, 14 years old; the only pure Filipino in the group.

Though coming from various lineages, the girls perfectly jive together to form a melodic clique that is POP GIRLS. This impression is also very much in tune with the album the girls are now working on. Boss Vic has gathered renowed international producers Christian de Walden and Marcus Davis, along with local producer Civ Fontanilla, to pitch in their expertise to create one world class debut album.

The debut album echoes the sound that is distinctly POP GIRLS- youthful, sweet, light, infections… with catchy beat that would make everyone groove and uncomplicated lyrics that would make everyone sing along. The songs mirror the colorful life of the young with themes such as puppy love, shopping, dancing, and basically having fun!

Now nearing its final stage of completion, the album is composed of 13 tracks, mostly original ones such as Crazy For You, and upbeat song by Marcus and Amber Davis and Crushy, written by Geleen Eugenio herself. Also included are covers of hits such as Urong-Sulong and Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso.

POP GIRLS indeed is the new face of music and sound of Philippine Pop Music. The teenage group is undoubtedly at par,
or even better than the rest of the Asian groups which continue to invaded the music scene today. POP GIRLS seals the country’s rightful claim to P-POP as the new nickname for Philippine Pop Music to reflect the youthful flair of the group and the music, very much in the tradition of Korea’s K-Pop and Japan’s J-POP.

And as for LAi, Mar, Rose, Schai, and Nadine, these girls now become the new wholesome and well- educated trendsetters of the youth in the country, not only in terms of song, dance, and music but in personality and lifestyle as well.

PERSONAL NOTE: Okay, so they were inspired to become soon to be a big hit Philippine Girl Group? Wow! Their style looks like a Korean fashion inspired huh? And their group’s name is too plain and usual. Srsly, this thing really gives me a goosebumps. Baket ba ang hilig ng Pinoy gumawa ng girl group na may halong ibang lahi? Baket hindi nalang pure na Pinay?! I don’t think this is a good idea, IMHO. Anyway, let’s just see on their debut performances. No to lip-synching please~ Hehe. Will this POP GIRLS make a big hit in Philippines Pop Music soon?

Listening to Korean pop (aka Kpop) is one my remedy whenever I feel tired, bored, depressed, etc. It gives me this refreshing aura for a short time while listening to Kpop music. I’ve been into Kpop music since 2003 and still counting. ^^ BoA Kwon was the first Kpop artist that I get to know through surfing the net. Lol. Some people were saying whenever they have known ppl who loves Kpop or any asian music such as Jpop, Cpop, Tpop, etc. is ‘jologs‘. How come can you say ‘jologs’ to this ppl if they had their own choice of music. Anyway, I respect their own opinions, but please respect these ppl as well.

Now that Kpop is already invaded our beloved country “Philippines” because of Wonder Girls, Super Junior, TVXQ and 2NE1. I just can’t imagine these ppl who used to say ‘jologs’ to other ppl by just listening to Kpop has become a Kpop addict already. Based on my experience its not possible for Filipinos not to get hooked with Korean music most esp. Filipinos really love pop music especially with the upbeat and dance music.

For me, Korean Entertainment is an eye-opener to well, all Filipino producers, artists, company and such. Local networks got so many singing talents and I must say talents of Filipinos are world class but they lack of something which Filipinos (esp. Filipino Kpop fans) were looking for. Korean Entertainment is a serious business to them which makes these companies engaged more by training their artists/talents for years before debuting their talents as an actress/actors, singers or dancers.
[ad#bidvertiser-large-rect]
Let’s give an example of Sandara Park, a Korean citizen who have known as a one of the contestant of SCQ (Star Circle Quest), a reality talent search on ABS-CBN few years ago. She became singer and artist under ABS-CBN talents instantly because of her charming personality after becoming the first-runner up in SCQ. Years had passed and we didn’t get much updates about her, until we found out last year thru local TV news that she became part of the trainee and signed a contract last 2007 on YG Entertainment, one of Korea’s record label who produces R&B and Hip hop music.

If you’ve seen her from her singing, dancing and hosting skills since she became one of the the member of Korean female group called 2NE1. You will noticed that she really improves alot unlike before, its because of training her for years in YG Entertainment. They look more into talents/skills of individuals not just by the looks of their talents. Some Korean netizens or citizens criticized artists whenever they lip-sync, that’s why Korean companies train more of their artists to perform it live without lip-syncing. ^^

You can’t blame us, Kpop addicts getting hooked with Kpop or Korean craze because Philippine TV networks were the one who introduced them to us by airing Korean Dramas on their networks. So yeah ~

Honestly, I’m kinda lost interest in Filipino Music/OPM anymore… I do listen to OPM before but now I think it decreases my interests listening to OPM and switched more to asian music that includes Kpop. I guess because I’m looking forward to hear more of OPM pop or dance songs than ballads, ‘birit’ , rock and alternative songs. Haha XD

So guys, are you a fan of Kpop just like me? If Yes, then shout your voice out!! Share your stories, experiences and opinions about discovering Kpop.
