POP GIRLS : A Philippine Pop Girl Group

Philippine pop music goes through a refreshing rebirth with the emergence of the newest girl group of five teenage scene with compelling charm, striking style and total talent.
Aptly, christened Pop Girls, the group is an outcome of the collaboration of two of the most influential names in the music industry-recording magnate Boss Vic del Rosario who was responsible for creating the biggest multimedia stars of the country such as Sharon Cuneta, Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Sarah Geronimo, among others; and topnotch dancer/choreographer Geleen Eugenio who honed the dancing skills of celebrities like Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor and brought Universal Motion Dancers to the peak of the their career.
Seeing the young as consistently plausible target, Boss Vic challenges Geleen to form a group of appealing young girls who are all exceptional in singing and dancing. Though she was set to leave for the US then, Geleen decided to forgo her initial plan to accept the project and called for an audition.
There were more than fifty hopefuls but only five passed the rigid screening. But the final decision came about when Boss Vic actually saw the chosen girls perform. He was swyaed right away with each of the girls that they were immediately awarded both management and recording contracts.
The fabulous five who make up POP GIRLS are twins Lai and Mar, both aged 16 and half Lebanese; Half Filipino, half Dutch Rose, 13 years old; Half Filipino, half Swiss Schai, 14 years old; the only pure Filipino in the group.
Though coming from various lineages, the girls perfectly jive together to form a melodic clique that is POP GIRLS. This impression is also very much in tune with the album the girls are now working on. Boss Vic has gathered renowed international producers Christian de Walden and Marcus Davis, along with local producer Civ Fontanilla, to pitch in their expertise to create one world class debut album.
The debut album echoes the sound that is distinctly POP GIRLS- youthful, sweet, light, infections… with catchy beat that would make everyone groove and uncomplicated lyrics that would make everyone sing along. The songs mirror the colorful life of the young with themes such as puppy love, shopping, dancing, and basically having fun!
Now nearing its final stage of completion, the album is composed of 13 tracks, mostly original ones such as Crazy For You, and upbeat song by Marcus and Amber Davis and Crushy, written by Geleen Eugenio herself. Also included are covers of hits such as Urong-Sulong and Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso.
POP GIRLS indeed is the new face of music and sound of Philippine Pop Music. The teenage group is undoubtedly at par,
or even better than the rest of the Asian groups which continue to invaded the music scene today. POP GIRLS seals the country’s rightful claim to P-POP as the new nickname for Philippine Pop Music to reflect the youthful flair of the group and the music, very much in the tradition of Korea’s K-Pop and Japan’s J-POP.
And as for LAi, Mar, Rose, Schai, and Nadine, these girls now become the new wholesome and well- educated trendsetters of the youth in the country, not only in terms of song, dance, and music but in personality and lifestyle as well.

PERSONAL NOTE: Okay, so they were inspired to become soon to be a big hit Philippine Girl Group? Wow! Their style looks like a Korean fashion inspired huh? Srsly, this thing really gives me a goosebumps. Baket ba ang hilig ng Pinoy gumawa ng girl group na may halong ibang lahi? Baket hindi nalang pure na Pinay?! I don’t think this is a good idea, IMHO. Anyway, let’s just see on their debut performance. No to lip-synching please~ Hehe. I wonder which network will they going to appear? ABS-CBN or GMA? Will this POP GIRLS make a big hit in Philippines Pop Music soon? I hope so! ^^;

HONESTLY, instead of bashing, i would like to recommend. first, it would be nice sana if they were all pure pinays, so that they can show pinay beauty so it’s okay for nadine. the rest well i duno. per i’d prefer undiscovered talent na hindi international looking. you now, like those others coming from different provinces so that others can be given a chance for fame and show their true talents. there are still some girls who could sing and dance better than them still unknown. i myself am a certified k-pop fan but to see these girls doing the same thing doesn’t cut it out for me. i’d like originality, in music (maybe some filipino-inspired pop music), clothing (you know, like what we see filipino hip hoppers wear with filipino pride on their shirts), so they need a whole lot of changing for me. hmmm, take the vid and song of mainit, time to change of the all-stars and various filipino artists but in a teen version. you know.

i would appreciated it more if they’re Filipino-looking girls with the likes of Nikki Gil, etc. sadly, am not liking them…sana we would be more creative…in terms of fashion yung talagang Pinoy style…lam ko kaya natin yun! di ko feel maging nega…pero opinyon lamang!

“trendsetters of the youth in the country”??? gee i hope not..i wouldn’t be caught dead wearing what most of them are wearing. i haven’t heard their album, and i don’t think i want to (not interested enough) despite having “renowned international producers”. maybe these girls have talent, but i don’t think they’ll be a hit.

I’m not happy with the fact that they’re half-halfs. And, I saw their music video and, well, I thought they should have trained more.

[ Reply to this comment]
PSH. okay. so bakit hindi pure PINAY? dun ako naiinis. anttba pa! grr. sana man lang yung SNSD inspiredyng song at yung kaawan, well, let’s just see.FPOP ba ‘to?

This is not TRUE P-Pop if the members arent FULL FILIPINO!
They have great songs and a great style but they shouldnt be “Philippines first POP group” since they arent all Full Filipinas. Its Bullshit!
I know dozens of girls who are full blood filipina that can sing better, dance better and look better than these girls.
I think the girls shouldve trained a bit more, gigged a bit more. The girls arent ready to be the NEXT BEST THING! If the Pinoy industry think that by having half somethings half filipino members are gonna get them international recognition? think again Its not the way to go about it.
My advice for the Pure FIlipino in the group is to go solo. A pinay soloist can do better than 4 halfcasts.
My prediction for these girls are that they are gonna be one hit wonders. They’re not ready yet. Before releasing a vid and songs THey shouldve done more gigs and trained more so they get the feel of theyre audience and what its like in the business, mind that they are still young, They dont have the chops for it yet. THey are bound for a quick fall, this is gonna end up like a train wreck, one hit wonder.

@OpinionatedPinay, I agree. I agree so much.
Honestly, that video was so embarrassing to Filipino K/J-pop fans. If I could redo their wardrobe and take out that auto tune, I would ’cause the two just makes the group look cheap. And at least get a good choreographer, I mean, we have a lot of good choreographers like the ones who do Sketchers Dance Battle or like, The Philippine All Stars. They should work on their talent before debuting. I mean, look at 2ne1, it took them four years before they could debut.

they already launched their album on SOP and Unang Hirit but I’m not sure if they are going to be under the network.
and i’m not happy with the fact that they are halfs it would be better if they are pure Filipinos. nakakainsecure naman kasi na dito s pinas ngayon mas pinapaboran s mga talent searches ang halfs duh! bka mapuno n ng halfs ang showbusiness?
pano natin cla maipagmamalaki e parang npka dominant ng pgiging foreigner nila ? hope mrealize nila yun
anyway, i’ll try my very best to support P-POP ^_^ despite these ^_^

Well mga Pinoy nga kayo, mga mapangliit! Crab mentality nga naman ng mga pinoy abot hanggang toktok mula sa impierno…
Wala originality? Bakit sino pa bang original ngaun?
Sa mga Kpop fanatics na akala mo eh pag aari nila ang Kpop (btw, im a Kpop fan too) isaksak nio sa lalamunan nio!!
Now for my comments:
1. Hindi kagandahan ang isa pero they’re still to young para masabing pangit, baka maganda pag personal
2. Geleen Eugenio??? WTF??? ito ang isang malaking pagkakamali ni Vic Del Rosario sa project na to… Hind na kapanahunan nila Sharon and the likes ngaun we’re already in the 21st cent… Sana mas bata na lang ang choreographer
3. the MV is ok, yes we can see some 2ne1 thinggy there but its ok though…
4. Sana kahit 2 lang ang Half Pinay pero wala namang masama kung half lang basta may lahing pinoy pa din eh sa Korea nga Chinese ang lahi pero nasa Korean Group…
So mga pinoy lets just wait and see kung ano kaya nila its really too early to criticize them…
Why cant we all Pinoys be proud that some1 initiated on doing a Pop Cultural in the Philippines? Im sure ung iba galit lang dahil associated ang Pop girls for now sa GMA 7

this is so pathetic… kailangan ba talaga pag may sikat na girl band sa ibang bansa eh tutularan ng mga pinoy? kakahiya naman kung lagi nalang tayong sunod ng sunod sa mga ibang bansa…
filipino’s are great immitators… pero d naman ata tama na we live under the shadows of other countries. ano nalang sasabihin nila na wala tayong originality.
this kind of stuff doesnt make a proud filipino at all. chaka ang wierd ng mga suot nila.. parang rainbow… lol
[ Reply to this comment]
Yuck… that’s so loser… gagawa sila ng pop girl group kailangan pa talagang foreigner?? haven’t they heard of the saying, ‘tangkilikin ang sariling lahi’?
Pop Girls?? Nabasa ko sya sa asianfanatics.net. Hmm… okay lang na ganyan ung style nila para sa akin pero OPM is mostly on revivals kasi eh… nagrerevive lang sila ng songs so parang ang pangit naman…
OMG… nagiging anti’s tayo xDD
tsaka Pop Girls?? sa dami daming pangalan sa mundo Pop Girls pa ung naging pangalan?? alam nyo ba that name sucks more than Brown Eyed Girls or Lady Collection or other K-Pop girl groups names… at mas marunong tayo mag-english… yang pangalan na yan ung naisip nila??
tsaka konti lang ung training experiences nila… 2 months?? are you kidding me?? si se7en nga 4 years nagtrain under YG… at isip nila that they’ll conquer the music industry just like that?? the looks fit it but the talent doesn’t…
