About UFC Fighting and Its History
There was the first steroid controversy of the organization after UFC 36. UFC 36 was held on 22 March 2002 and would give the fans a new heavyweight champion in Josh Barnett who beat defending Randy Couture for the title. Shortly thereafter, Barnett was required to submit a test for steroids which returned positive. Since the match was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, the State of Nevada held jurisdiction over the sporting event but had not yet been given the authority to overturn decisions based on the results of drug tests. Randy Couture refused to be given back the title and Barnett left the UFC for Japan never to return to the league again.
UFC 94 was famous for the Vaseline controversy. This was the first time in the company’s history that there would be a bout between two opponents in different weight classes. This welterweight championship bout was between Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn. What was controversial was that there were accusations made that St. Pierre had Vaseline applied in his corner between rounds. This became even more apparent after St. Pierre was ordered to be wiped down between rounds 2 and 3. St. Pierre still won the title and retained it in spite of Penn’s protests about the Vaseline to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. You will many MMA videos bloggers have talked about this fight on their blogs.
Brock Lesnar stirred up controversy because of his pro wrestling background. Brock Lesnar started in amateur and professional wrestling and became a star in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) organization. In October 2007, he signed with the UFC and would become a heavyweight champion in 2008. What made the controversy was that critics questioned his background in the theatrics of the WWE. They were concerned that other UFC fighters would be viewed in the same light as WWE wrestlers who were often viewed-as show performers.
