In today’s western world we are used to seeing both men and women with tattoos, some for sentimental reasons and others for decorative reasons. However, tattoos and tattoo designs are not a new concept in fact there is a varied and interesting history behind them going as far back as thousand of years.
The history of tattoos varies according to different cultures, religions and countries. For instance, the Egyptians were known to use tattoos as a way of decorating their bodies, this is shown in drawings on internal walls of pyramids. Historical studies and research also shows that around 2000 BC the Chinese also tattooed themselves for decorative and cultural purposes.
In Japan, tattoos are often frowned upon as they are commonly associated with the ‘Yakuza’ who often tattoo their whole bodies as a way of associating themselves with the gang.
It is also well known that Thailand has a long history of tattooing. However, rather than using tattoos as a way of decorating their body Thais opt for tattoo designs in the form of Buddhist images and symbols as a way of offering protection, these tattoos are called ‘Sak Yant’. It is also believed that a protective tattoo done by the best tattooist is the strongest, so much so it can even protect them from bullets.
Tattoos are also popular with New Zealand’s Moriori people, they believe that tattoos started because of a romantic love affair between a princess named Niwareka and a young gentleman names Mataora. It is believed that after the young man beat his young lover he ran away due to immense guilt and some while later returned with his face painted, the two young lovers were the reunited and created the art of ‘taniko’ and ‘ta moko’.
